♥ 25 Notes / Fri Aug 12th, 2011 ≡ reblogI find this ‘confessions’ trend of covering the eyes of characters entirely creepy, especially when the ‘confession’ is negative. Anonymity as a enabler of hateful opinions is one thing, but covering/tampering with the eyes is long established of a way of dehumanizing people.
What’s the easiest way to establish a character as an alien? “Strange” eyes. What’s a safe bet to code a character as creepy or different? Odd, damaged, blind or missing eyes. Eyes are a common target in assaults, be it a brawl or intimate partner violence. Because there’s something about the eyes.
We close the eyes of our dead because we can’t face the sight of lifeless eyes, their humanity gone. Eyes are the “windows on the soul”. Eyes and eye contact are code as proof of our human emotions; guilt, truth, honesty, and when we don’t receive them we don’t like it (“you couldn’t even look me in the eyes”). Putting eyes on something immediately gives them “human” qualities.
The trend of covering the eyes of character coupled with anonymous often hateful, prejudiced opinions with wider implications about the culture we live in is something that we shouldn’t dismiss discussion or criticism of. I’m personally not okay with a culture that does something so creepy and doesn’t even question if it’s okay.
